His dominance at cruiserweight set the stage for an even greater challenge: the heavyweight division, where legends are made. In 2019, Usyk made his much anticipated heavyweight debut. The world took notice when he faced Anthony Joshua in September 2021 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London. Usyk outboxed the British-Nigerian powerhouse over 12 rounds,clinching the WBA(Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles.
The rematch in August 2022 only reaffirmed Usyk’s dominance. Despite a more aggressive Joshua, the Ukrainian retained his belt via split decision. His calm under pressure and technical brilliance proved that size alone does not win fights.
In May 2024, Usyk took his place in boxing’s pantheon when he defeated Tyson Fury, the then WBC champion, in a historic unification bout that crowned him the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. This achievement made Usyk the first man in the four belt era to become undisputed in two separate divisions, a feat matched by no one else in the modern era.
