Published By Olumide Donald, Tuesday July 22,2025

In the world of boxing, few names have etched themselves as indelibly in recent memory as Oleksandr Usyk. The Ukrainian southpaw, known for his elusive footwork, exceptional IQ,and unwavering discipline, has risen from modest roots to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion, carving a legacy that transcends national borders and defies expectations.

Born on January 17, 1987, in Simferopol, Crimea( Then part of the Ukrainian SSR), Usyk’s Early years were far removed from the glitz and glamour of professional boxing. His father was a military man, and life was defined by struggle and perseverance. Initially drawn to football, Usyk later shifted his focus to boxing at the age of 15.Guided by discipline and a burning desire to succeed , he trained relentlessly in a local gym, quickly distinguishing himself in the amateur ranks.

Usyk’s defining amateur moment came at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he captured gold in the heavyweight division, representing Ukraine with pride. His victory wasn’t just a personal milestone, it was a symbol of national pride for a country navigating political and social transitions.

Following his Olympic triumph, Usyk evolved to the professional scene in 2013. He didn’t take the traditional slow road to the top. Instead, Usyk rapidly climbed the ranks with surgical precision, winning the fight after fight across various countries and silencing doubters along the way.

In a historic feat, Usyk became the undisputed  cruiserweight champion in 2018, defeating Russia’s Murat Gassiev in the final of the World Boxing Super Series. This victory made him the first boxer in history to hold all four major world titles(WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO) at cruiserweight, achieving undisputed status in just 15 professional fights.

His dominance at cruiserweight set the stage for an even greater challenge: the heavyweight division, where legends are made. In 2019, Usyk made his much anticipated heavyweight debut. Though questions lingered about his power and durability against naturally larger opponents, Usyk answered emphatically. The world took notice when he faced Anthony Joshua in September 2021 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London. Usyk outboxed the British-Nigerian  powerhouse over 12 rounds, clinching the WBA(Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles.

The rematch in August 2022 only reaffirmed Usyk’s dominance. Despite a more aggressive Joshua, the Ukrainian retained his belt via split decision. His calm under pressure and technical brilliance proved that size alone does not win fights.

In May 2024, Usyk took his place in boxing’s pantheon when he defeated Tyson Fury, the then WBC champion, in a historic unification bout that crowned him the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. This achievement made Usyk the first man in the four belt era to become undisputed in two separate divisions, a feat matched by no one else in the modern era.

Beyond the ring, Usyk has become a symbol of national resilience, especially amid Ukraine’s ongoing struggles. His victories have carried emotional weight, offering hope and pride to millions of Ukrainians. A devout Christian and Family man, he remains grounded, often crediting faith, family, and country for his strength.
