The Sports World Bids Farewell to a GoalKeeping Icon, July 3,2025
Special Review By Olumide Donald
Today, the world of sports mourns the passing of a Nigerian legend, a son of the soil, and hero to millions, Peter Rufai, former Super Eagles goalkeeper and one of Africa’s most celebrated football icons. He passed away today, Thursday July 3rd, 2025, at the age of 62. The news of his death has sent shockwaves across Nigeria and the entire football fraternity, as tributes continue to pour in from fans, fellow athletes, football bodies, and admirers from around the globe.

Popularised known as ” Dodo Mayana,” Peter Rufai was more than just a goalkeeper, he was a symbol of national pride, resilience, and sporting excellence. A man who stood tall between the sticks during Nigeria’s golden football years in the 1990’s, Rufai was the last line of defense who gave Nigerians countless moments of joy, suspense, and ultimate triumph.
Peter Rufai’s career highlights include his pivotal role in Nigeria’s victory at the 1994 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and his historic appearance at the USA 1994 and France 1998 FIFA World cups, where he served as the first-choice goalkeeper. He made over 60 appearances for the national team, inspiring confidence with every save and marshalling the defense with calm authority and fierce patriotism.
Beyond the Greene whites green jersey, Rufai had a commendable club career that saw him play in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and notably in Spain, where he donned the gloves for Deportivo LA Coruna and Hercules CF. His presence in Europe helped pave the way for other Nigerian and African goalkeepers to pursue careers on the global stage.
Off the pitch, Peter Rufai was a man if poise, humility and integrity. Known for his ever smiling face and dignified composure,he carried the weight of national expectations with grace. Post-retirement, he became an active sports mentor, youth advocate, and motivational speaker. Through his Dodo Mayana Foundation, he invested in grassroots football development and advocated for sports education among Nigerian youths.
Rufai’s life was also marked by royal blood, the son of a traditional ruler, he famously turned down the throne to continue serving his country through football. That decision defined his life, one of service , not status.
As the sun sets on a heroic chapter, Nigeria and the entire African continent are cloaked in mourning. Former teammates, coaches, fans, and sporting institutions have all expressed their grief and paid glowing tributes to a man who gave everything to the game he loved.
Former teammate Jay-Jay Okocha wrote on social media: ” We’ve lost a giant.Peter Rufai was more than a teammate; he was a brother, a protector, a true Eagle. Rest easy ,legend.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) released an official statement: ”We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our finest ever.Peter Rufai will forever be remembered as a national treasure. Our prayers are with his family.”
His death leaves a void not just in Nigerian Sports history, but in the hearts of millions who grew up shouting his name during epic football matched. The memory of his diving saves, commanding presence, and the iconic jersey he wore will remain etched in the collective consciousness of Nigerian football lovers.
As the final whistle blows on the earthly journey of Peter Rufai, we take solace in the fact that legends never die, they live forever in the stories they wrote, the barriers they broke, and the lives they touched.
Peter Rufai did not just guard the goalpost; he guarded the nation’s hope. He did not just dive for balls; he dove into history. He did not just wear a Jersey; he wore the dreams of millions.
Today, we salute a hero.
Today, we bow before a legend.
Today, we say goodbye to a man who made us believe.
